When starting out in the game it’s easy to get frustrated that you aren’t beating some of the smaller stakes games you’ll be playing in. In my next two columns, I am going to discuss some tournament strategies that can be successful under specific circumstances. The most obvious strategy is the small-ball approach, made famous. As “Kid Poker” himself observes, most small-stakes daily or nightly tournaments run by local casinos use a turbo structure. In other words, the starting stacks are on the smaller side (5,000 to 10,000 chips, for the most part), while the blinds escalate quite rapidly at 15- or 20-minute intervals.
